The University of Ioannina was founded in 1964 and has been autonomous since 1970. Today, the University of Ioannina has 16 academic departments and 10 undergraduate academic departments that will start their operation during the next two years.
The academic unit responsible for this project is the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, which was founded in 1990 as a Department of Computer Science, admitted its first students in 1993 and since 1998 has a well-organized advanced graduate program. Since then, the Department has become one of the leading Departments of Greece in Computer Science, by securing state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, by developing a curriculum based on international standards and by establishing international collaborations and ensuring participation in national and European research and development programs. Since June 2013, the Department has evolved in a Department of Computer Science and Engineering with a 5 year mandatory course of study leading to MEng Diploma.
The University of Ioannina and the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics have in recent years secured excellent positions in international rankings, particularly in the field of research.
The Computer Graphics Research Group (CGRG), led by Prof. Ioannis Fudos, is active in the field of graphics, data visualization and computer design. More specifically, the research activities of the group include animation, rendering, mesh processing-editing-deformation, reverse engineering, computer-aided design, image retrieval, multidimensional data visualization and other areas in collaboration with other teams of the Distributed Management of Data Laboratory (http://cgrg.cs.uoi.gr, http://www.dmod.eu). The team has successfully coordinated European and national projects in the areas of Computer Aided Design, Computer Graphics, 3D Reconstruction, and Promotion and Protection of Cultural Heritage. The team has conducted pioneering research in mesh processing and multifragment rendering.
In Q3D project, the UoI team will study the parameters and problems encountered in various 3D printing technologies, determine how to acquire, store and process data collected during and after 3D printing, establish detection methods for robustness problems during 3D printing and possible actions to alleviate them. The team will also develop tools for rendering 3D objects and their interior as well as visualizing areas where 3D printing problems arise.
